Interested in joining the BFA? Are you 18 years or older? Have you danced before? What are your favorite regions?
Thank you for your interest in auditioning for the BFA. I really look forward to meeting you and welcome new dancers as we look toward our 2021 season and the adventures to come.
The BFA's 2022 Season is generally January through August, summer descanso, return to rehearsals beginning of September, winter descanso mid December returning the following year.
The BFA's mission is to
Preserve, Promote, Create and Educate about Indigenous Dance and Culture, to Develop the Mind, Body and Spirit.
BFA an Attitude of Willingness to Learn, Try and Share Positive Energy...
It is our focus to pass on the ancient knowledge and wisdom embedded in our culture, the indigenous aspects of our culture, maintaining the indigenous concept of respect and love. As such participation in the BFA requires a willingness to learn not only the dances, it also requires the willingness to learn what the dances are about through the stories of the dances and through participation in the crafting of the various vesturarios as called upon, by assisting as best one can.
This means on occasion working on accessories/props, headdresses, trenzas and rodetes etc., the bulk of the vestuarios I acquire, provide, create for the various regions and productions. Interest in assistance is always welcomed, as well as connections to avenues of attaining the needed items.
There are some elements each dancer may need eventually to provide for themselves. Each dancer is expected to be willing to try as much as possible, yet keeping a healthy balance between your school/work/and playtime with your dance time/rehearsal performance time. Participate fully and be responsible for their own rehearsal items fans, rebozo, shoes, rehearsal skirt, performance shoes and personal items, and help sell tickets to our 4 major shows. In return they receive instruction and the bulk of the costuming is provided.
We are always looking for performers who are 18 or above and understand the level of commitment required for the BFA Company and who can make this type of commitment for the year. These are some of the question to consider, of which you may have already provided the information or will need to provide. How old are you and when did you last dance, for how long? What are your favorite regions and dance? Where did you dance before, what group? Who was your instructor? Have you sung, acted, played an instrument? Do you have your own rehearsal skirt and shoes, transportation and can you get to rehearsals and performances on time and consistently? Does your family and friends understand this type of commitment and the effect on your life? Where did you hear about us? Do you go to school, do you work, what skills/resources can you offer the BFA?
Perfecting your craft is a constant and often dancers find the time to do so of their own accord, individually or getting together with another at other days/times, to work on a step or choreography. When in production for the major show scheduled rehearsal times may increase as well as run longer, adding other days and times. The last week prior to production performers are expected to be available to rehearse all week. Dancers are expected to attend all rehearsal, especial new dancers. We do take into account personal situations, but it is important to be consistent. We do take breaks in between major shows but it is also intense during rehearsal and attentiveness is important, yet enjoying ourselves on the floor and having fun is important too! Keeping spirits light and not stressed out is the attitude to strive for. Dancing is something to relieve the stress of day, and the studio is a safe place to enjoy oneself.
4 Major Productions
As mentioned before dancers are expected to commit to the 4 major productions, participating fully and sell tickets. The first is Floreo at the beginning of February, the story of a student's 1st skirt. Around the beginning of March our annual showcase occurs with various regions and interludes of song and poetry in honor of our founder, "The Herminia Tribute, Flor y Canto". At the beginning of May for Cinco de Mayo time "Mitotili Poblana" the story of Celebration, Prophecy and Ceremonia. And concluding the season is "The Night Sky, A Revolutionary Rebozo" a musical dance theatre production telling the story of the heirloom rebozo The Night Sky, Muertos meet the Mexican Revolution meets Turkeyday, occurs annually around Dia de los Muertos time at the beginning of November. This one all dancers endeavor to act, sing and play the jarana (a musical instrument from Veracruz) as best they can, some take lead roles in the production others mostly dance.
Community Performances
We also expect the dancers to perform in as many community performances as they can, mostly in town although we have had some requests out of town.
If this adventure is something you are interested in please reply to this email or call to schedule and audition, be prepared to follow along.
If this is endeavor is a bit much for you now and if you would like private lessons at this time or in the future let me know and we can schedule that too.
I look forward to hearing from you.
